By Chief Jonathan Riffe
July 27, 2011

Wednesday July 27, 2011 at 1200 hours (shortly after clearing a haz-mat incident), Chief 6 (Riffe), Chief 6A (Montgomery), Squad 6 (Lt Buckler) and Ambulance 69 (Luckett) were alerted for the serious auto accident at Bayside Road and Summer City Blvd (104 box). While en route, Communications advised that police were on the scene with an unconscious person. A helicopter was immediately requested by Chief 6 which alerted Engine 61 (Rountree) to the Landing Zone. Units from the North Beach VFD arrived to find a serious 3-vehicle accident. A box truck and passenger vehicle struck head-on. The driver of the vehicle was trapped and would require extensive extrication to be freed. The box truck overturned after striking the vehicle and clipping a tree but both passengers self-extricated. A 3rd vehicle to avoid the accident, swerved off the road and struck a tree head-on.

Squad 6 arrived on location and deployed a multitude of HURST tools to assist Rescue 1 with extrication. After approximately 20 minutes, the driver was extricated with serious life-threatening injuries. Ambulance 69 transported the patient to the Landing Zone priority 1 for air transport to a local trauma center. Units from the Huntingtown VFD remained on the scene until 1301 hours.
