By Chief Jonathan Riffe
July 25, 2011

Monday July 25, 2011 at 0955 hours, Chief 6A (Montgomery), Chief 6B (Morris), Engine 61 (Montgomery Jr) and Squad 6 (Rountree) were alerted for the gas leak in a commercial building in Prince Frederick. 5 minutes later at 1000 hours, Communications advised Squad 6 to re-route back to Huntingtown for an auto accident. With Engine 61 enroute to the gas leak, Chief 6B, Squad 6, Engine 62 (Gaylor) and Paramedic Ambulance 68 (Pavia) were alerted for the auto accident at 140 Dalrymple Road. North Beach VFD Rescue 1 and Ambulance 19 were also brought to the call. While en route Communications advised that police were on scene advising that reconstruction was starting. Units from the Huntingtown VFD arrived on location and found a single-vehicle that had left the roadway for unknown reasons, drove through a field, a yard, went airborne over a driveway, and drove several hundred feet down through the woods before striking a tree. The single occupant behind the wheel was not breathing and without a pulse. Crews immediately went to work extricating the driver and carrying him several hundred feet to the ambulance with CPR in progress. Ambulance 69 transported the patient to Calvert Memorial Hospital where unfortunately he perished. Our thoughts and prayers to the family involved. Units from the Huntingtown VFD returned to service in 30 minutes.
