Heavy Fire on Bond Street

By Chief Jonathan Riffe
July 8, 2011

Friday July 8, 2011, as an early evening storm ripped through the area, 1850 hours, Chief 6 (Riffe), Safety Officer 6 (Mckenny), Engine 62 (Sgt Clark) and Tanker 6 (Hayden) were alerted to 7050 Bond Street for the house fire (701 box; 4th due). First arriving units arrived on location of a 2-story wood-frame house with fire showing from the 2nd floor and through the roof. Once inside, FF's quickly determined that 1/2 of the "attic" (quadrants "c" and "d") had been converted into living quarters with a stairwell from the 2nd to 3rd floor. In addition, 1/2 of the ceiling on the 2nd floor in quadrants "a" and "b" was hiding plywood just above it for the homeowners to use for storage and walk-way planks in the cockloft. However, due to excellent team work, the Truck companies began opening up the affected areas for the Engine companies on the 2nd and 3rd floors to quickly gain access to the hidden fire. Within 20 minutes, the bulk of the fire was confined and knocked down. The crew from Engine 62 arrived on location and assumed RIT responsibilities, opening up several egress points and relaying additional information to Command. Once the fire was knocked down, the crew went to work on the 2nd floor assisting with opening up and knocking down the remaining fire.
