By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
May 8, 2005

On Sunday May 8, 2005, Tanker 6 (Sgt Bivens) departed the station at 0700 hours to assist Company 2 (Prince Frederick) with burning an acquired house. While Tanker 6 was filling up with a load of water, Chief 6A (Riffe), Engine 61 (Safety Officer Cox), and Tanker 6 were alerted to "C" Street in Chesapeake Beach for the house fire. Company 1 (North Beach) and Engine 151 (Navy Base) arrived to find fire showing from the rear of a house. Units found a living room off and quickly made work of the fire. Command-Chief 1 (Freesland), Interior-Chief 1B (Gibson), Staging-Chief 6A (Riffe).

11 minutes after backing into quarters from the above fire, Chief 6A (Riffe), Chief 6B (Hayes), Engine 61 (Safety Officer Cox), Squad 6 (Foresta, M), and Ambulance 68 (Medic Patin) were alerted to the Arby's in Dunkirk for the kitchen fire. Company 5 units arrived to find heavy smoke showing. Upon entry, heavy fire was found in the rear of the store with the entire cockloft and attic heavily involved with fire. The crew from Engine 61 arrived, pulled a secondary attack line and assisted Engine 52 with the Interior. The crew from Squad 6 proceeded to the roof and began opening up. Squad 6 was assisted by Tower 2 and Tower 1. The fire was brought under control within twenty minutes and Huntingtown units cleared several hours later. One firefighter received minor injuries and two employees were transported for smoke inhalation. Command-Chief 5A (McCallister), Operations-Chief 5B (Miles), Roof-Chief 6A (Riffe)

While the above units were operating at Arby's, Company 6 was alerted for the mulch fire at Park Place in Huntingtown. Brush 6 (Grierson, R) arrived to find mulch on fire with extension to the siding of the house. The fire was quickly extinguished and Brush 6 returned thirty minutes later.

At 1852 hours, Engine 61 (Lt Montgomery) and Tanker 6 (Grierson, M) were alerted once again to Arby's for the re-kindle. Units arrived to find a small amount of fire present in the rafters. The fire was quickly brought under control and units remained on the scene for one hour overhauling the area. The crew from Engine 61 established the Water Supply at the dry hydrant.
