April 11, 2011

This past Friday April 8, 2011 was the Annual Calvert County Fire & Rescue Association Dinner and Awards Ceremony. During this dinner, specific individuals from the surrounding departments are awarded for their dedication to the Volunteer Fire/Rescue/EMS services. Huntingtown VFD member Brittney Colliflower was presented with the Dowell Showalter Award for outstanding EMS services, life saves, going above and beyond, etc in the community.

Her award stems from the following:
On August 15, 2010 a terrible accident occurred on Route 4 in Waysons Corner due to a truck driving into the back of a flat bed car transport vehicle. At the same time, member Brittney Colliflower was returning home and noticed the wreckage. Brittney noticed that the vehicle was on fire and the driver was trapped inside of the wreckage. After another bystander broke out a window and pried the door open, Brittney was able to climb into the vehicle and somehow remove his right foot and leg that were trapped under the dash. During this entire time, she was in danger but with no regard for her own life or safety, remained with the driver. Noticing that the heat and fire were intensifying, she decided to remove and drag the driver from the burning wreckage. Second later, the vehicle exploded into flames. If not for the heroic actions of Firefighter/EMT Brittney Colliflower the driver would have surely perished in the vehicle. Brittney is a true definition of a hero for saving the life of a complete stranger.
