Special Night for the Huntingtown Volunteers

By Chief Jonathan Riffe
October 7, 2010

Thursday October 7, 2010 was a special evening for several Huntingtown Volunteers. A total of 14 Huntingtown Volunteers were presented awards at the monthly business meeting. Member Brittney Colliflower was presented a Lifesaving Award by Chief Jonathan Riffe. The award reads: On August 15, 2010 a terrible accident occurred on Route 4 in Waysons Corner due to a truck driving into the back of a flat bed car transport vehicle. At the same time, member Brittney Colliflower was returning home and noticed the wreckage. Brittney noticed that the vehicle was on fire and the driver was trapped inside of the wreckage. After another bystander broke out a window and pried the door open, Brittney was able to climb into the vehicle and somehow remove his right foot and leg that were trapped under the dash. During this entire time, she was in danger but with no regard for her own life or safety, remained with the driver. Noticing that the heat and fire were intensifying, she decided to remove and drag the driver from the burning wreckage. Second later, the vehicle exploded into flames. If not for the heroic actions of Firefighter/EMT Brittney Colliflower the driver would have surely perished in the vehicle. Brittney is a true definition of a hero for saving the life of a complete stranger.

In addition, 13 members were presented an award, the "Sheriff's Salute" by Sheriff Mike Evans. The award reads "On September 7, 2010 Calvert County Deputy Sheriff Steve Esposito was involved in a minor accident in Huntingtown, Maryland. As a result of the accident, Deputy Esposito became entrapped in the vehicle. Chief Jonathan Riffe, Assistant Chief Michael Montgomery, Deputy Chief Philip Morris, Safety Officer Bo Mckenny, Lieutenant Josh Buckler, Michael Montgomery Jr, Dylan Smith, Hunter Stewart, Donald Wallace, Gene Farrell, Sean Fitzgerald, Josh Miller and Andrea Osbourn swiftly responded to the scene, took control of the situation and worked together to extricate Deputy Esposito from his vehicle. For their selfless actions and supreme dedication to the citizens of Calvert County the aforementioned members of the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad are hereby awarded this Sheriff's Salute.
