By Chief Jonathan Riffe
March 27, 2010

Saturday March 27, 2010 at 0600 hours, Chief 6A (Montgomery), Safety 6 (McKenny), Engine 61 (Sgt Williams) and Tanker 6 (Farrell) were alerted for the Working Building Fire at 10120 Southern Maryland Blvd (McCormick Paints), a 504 box (2nd due). Units from the Dunkirk VFD arrived on location of a one-story middle of the unit strip mall with heavy smoke and fire showing. With this information, Engine 62 (Bowen, S) responded 1st due on the Working Fire Dispatch. Engine 61 arrived in the rear, laying dual lines with heavy smoke and fire showing. The crew from Engine 61 stretched the 400' rear attack line, gained entry and to avoid pushing fire on 1st due crews, breached Exposure D1 and began knocking down heavy fire and opening up all exposed ceiling and walls in Exposures B1 and D1. The driver threw several ground ladders for roof operations where a trench cut was made to stop the spreading fire. Engine 62's crew arrived and advanced a 2 1/2" line to assist with Interior crews. Tanker 6 supplied 3 loads of water to the fireground. Units from the Calvert, PG and Anne Arundel County operated on this incident.

Due to aggressive work by all firefighters, all fire was contained within 20 minutes. Two units (paint store and tanning salon) were completely destroyed. Several other units were heavily damaged due to smoke. Units from the Huntingtown VFD operated until 0930 hours.
