Double Entrapment with One Fatality in Huntingtown

By Chief Jonathan Riffe
November 18, 2009

Wednesday November 18, 2009 at 1735 hours, Chief 6A (Montgomery), Chief 6C (Morris), Squad 6 (Nasti), Engine 62 (Miller), Ambulance 68 (Fitzgerald) and Ambulance 69 (Mulholland) were alerted for the auto accident at Route 4 and Sheckells Road. The Huntingtown Volunteers arrived to find a 2 vehicle "T-bone" crash with two people trapped (driver and passenger).

The crew from Squad 6 went to work stabilizing both vehicles and beginning the tedius extrication. The 2nd vehicle (SUV) actually ran into the driver's side compartment (2' instrusion) and crushed the car into the guardrail. Due to this, extrication proved to be a challenge with the majority of the work being performed by rescuers standing on the guardrail and on the hood/trunk of the vehicle. The 32" Jaws, Maverick Combi-tool, both sets of "O" cutters and a saw-zall wereused to remove the entire roof and windshield. In addition, several components of the dash board, gas pedal and brake pedal were cut away to free the driver's legs. Engine 62's crew deployed a charged handline and assisted with extrication efforts.

Two patients (handled by Ambulance 68 & 69) were flown to local trauma centers via Trooper 7 and Eagle 1. North Beach Ambulance 18 transported a third patient to Calvert Memorial Hospital. Due to Accident Reconstruction, Squad 6 remained on the scene until 1950 hours. It was not until later did we learn that the trapped driver unfortunately did not survive the accident.
