By Chief Jonathan Riffe
October 22, 2009

Thursday October 22, 2009 shortly before 2100 hours, Chief 6C (Morris) and Squad 6 (Lt Spriggs); with a total of 7 Volunteers were alerted for the auto accident at Broomes Island and Ball Road. Due to Squad 2 and Squad 7 being out of service for the past several weeks/months, this brought Squad 6 first due to the assignment (typically 3rd due) with a 12.26 traveling distance. Units from St Leonard VFD arrived on location with 3 vehicles involved, 4 patients total, and one patient trapped. With this information, one additional ambulance was requested bringing Ambulance 69 (Fitzgerald) with 4 additional Volunteers.

The crew from Squad 6 arrived and split into three crews. The driver and officer set up lights, as well as stabilizing and securing the vehicle with the trapped person. The 2nd crew went to work forcing and removing the passenger side as well as removing the passenger side roof. The 3rd crew removed the driver side of the roof. Total extrication time took 8 minutes with the HURST Combi tool and both "O" cutters. 3 patients were flown to local trauma centers via Trooper 2 and Trooper 7. A 4th patient was ground transported to Calvert Memorial. Units remained on the scene until 2145 hours.

During this time, 2 additional crews remained in quarters for the Engine and Tanker (for a total of four crews). On a side note, Squad 6 has been the only Squad in service for the past several weeks from Huntingtown to Hollywood, MD (St Mary's County)----a 33.15 mile distance. During this time period, a few times Squad 5 has been out of service, Huntingtown Squad 6 has been the only Squad in service from Upper Marlboro, MD to Hollywood, MD-----45.80 miles.
