Heavy Fire In Silverwood Farm Apts

By Chief Jonathan Riffe
July 31, 2009

Friday July 31, 2009, in the early evening hours, several Huntingtown VFD crews were operating on a tree down and two seperate auto accidents. At 1733 hours, Chief 6B (Thrasher), Captain 6 (Collins), Safety Officer 6 (McKenny), Sergeant 6 (Buckler), Engine 62 (Hayes), Squad 6 (Lt Grierson), and Ambulance 69 (Fitzgerald) were alerted to 270 Shore Acres Way in Silverwood Farm Apartments for the building fire (2nd due-211 box). First arriving crews arrived with heavy fire showing from all three floors, the attic, and through the roof. Crews immediately deployed several handlines and began going to work on extinguishing the fire. Throughout the incident, portable deluge guns, Wagon Pipes, and Ladder Pipes were placed in service to extinguish the quick moving fire. Crews from the Huntingtown VFD assisted with several operations: extinguishing the fire, search and rescue, utilities, and overhaul.

Fortunately, there were only 2 minor civilian injuries. The cause of the fire is still underway; however, bystanders advise a box truck backed into the gas meter causing a fire that quickly overtook the building before firefighters arrived. The entire incident went to 2 alarms with several additional units special called including every department from Calvert County with assistance from PG County and Anne Arundel County.

The 21 Huntingtown Volunteers operated on the scene until 2021 hours. Many thanks to the fill-in crews at Huntingtown VFD: PG County Engine 231 (Forestville) and Dunkirk Ambulance 58
