By Chief Jonathan Riffe
February 8, 2009

Sunday February 8, 2009 at 0900 hours, Ambulance 68 (Lt Grierson) was alerted for the broken leg on Smoky Road. At the end of Smoky Road is the Kings Landing Hunting Reserve (a 968 plot of land, fields, hills, cliffs, creeks, marsh, etc). Further information from Communications advised that a man had been crushed by a horse, was off the roadway on the reserve, and another horseback rider would meet emergency personnel. With this, Chief 6 (Riffe), Chief 6A (Montgomery), Chief 6B (Thrasher), Chief 6C (Morris), Captain 6 (Collins), Squad 6 (Lt Robison) and Jeep 6 (Hayes) now responded on the call. In addition, Dunkirk Brush 5 & Medic 102 were alerted.

Upon arrival, units had to standby for appoximately 30 minutes awaiting the horseback rider (911 caller). The caller advised that the patient was approximately 3 miles off the roadway and down a ravine suffering from a broken leg. With this information, Safety Officer 6 (McKenny) responded on the call with RTV Gator 6. After 96 minutes from the 911 call, the patient was located, removed from the woods, loaded into Ambulance 68 and transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital.
