By Chief Jonathan Riffe
December 27, 2008

In the early morning hours, shortly after 0230 hours, Sunday December 27, 2008, Chief 6 (Riffe), Chief 6B (Montgomery), Squad 6 (Nasti), Engine 62 (Sgt Morris), Engine 61 (S/O Bowen), and Ambulance 68 (Miller) were alerted for the auto accident at Route 4 & Ponds Wood Road. With supplemental information received of it being serious, Dunkirk Squad 5, Ambulance 59, & Medic 105 were brought to the call. The Huntingtown Volunteers arrived to find a single-vehicle over the guardrail, overturned, with one person trapped, and the other ejected lying in the highway. Ambulance 68 immediately began tending to the ejected patient. Squad 6 & Engine 62 arrived and split into seperate crews. One crew went to work on the driver's side of the vehicle while the 2nd crew went to work on the passenger's side of the vehicle utilitzing the 32" Jaws, Maverick Combi-tool, and "O" Cutters to remove and force both front doors. The driver's of both pieces stabilized the vehicle and an additional firefighter stood by with a charged hand-line. Engine 61 arrived and established the Landing Zone for Trooper 2 & Trooper 7, but was eventually cancelled due to weather. Squad 5 assisted with extricating. Both patients were transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital by Ambulance 68 & Ambulance 59. The 19 Huntingtown Volunteers operated on the scene for 45 minutes.
