By Chief Jonathan Riffe
August 2, 2008

Saturday August 2, 2008, at 1000 hours, 911 Communications began receiving several phone calls of a vehicle into a tree and on fire in the 4900 blk of Hardesty Road (618 box). With Chief 6 (Riffe), Squad 6 (Sgt Morris), Engine 61 (Lt Thrasher), Ambulance 69 (Montgomery, Jr), and North Beach Ambulance 18 responding, Communications received supplemental information from the Sheriff's Department that all subjects were out of the vehicle. Less than one minute later the Huntingtown Volunteers arrived to find the exact opposite. The single-vehicle Mustang left the roadway, striking a tree head-on, trapping the driver AND passenger (no subjects were out). In less than 5 minutes both patients were extricated with the use of the HURST "Maverick" and "O Cutters". Engine 61 stood fast with a charged hand-line. Due to the severity of injuries, both patients were flown to a nearby trauma center. Engine 61 cleared the scene and handled the Landing Zone at Sunderland Elementary. Medic 105 was also alerted to the call. Units cleared at 1100 hours.
