Two Extricated & Flown in Huntingtown

By Chief Jonathan Riffe
July 7, 2008

Monday July 7, 2008, Chief 6C (Hayes) and a crew of 5 Huntingtown Volunteers aboard Engine 62 (Capt Collins) were filling-in at the United Communities VFD on the Eastern Shore (Queen Anne County). With Engine 62 on the Eastern Shore and Engine 61 still out of service until tomorrow, our fellow brothers at the Dunkirk VFD allowed us to borrow Engine 52 for the day (running as Engine 62).

At 1440 hours, a 2nd crew aboard Ambulance 69 (Montgomery Jr) was en route to the hospital from a medical local. In addition, Chief 6 (Riffe), Chief 6B (Montgomery), and Engine 62 (Sgt Morris), were clearing a seperate call. On the way back, a serious auto accident had just occured at Route 4 and Sheckells Road. Involved in the accident was a farming truck and 2 additional vehicles. In one vehicle, the driver and front seat passenger were both trapped. Engine 62's driver quickly deployed the front pre-connect line for protection while the crew attempted to force both doors with the haligan bar. At the same time, Communications dispatched the assignment bringing Chief 6A (Spriggs), Squad 6 (Wells), Ambulance 69 (clearing the hospital), Prince Frederick VFD Squad 2, and Prince Frederick Ambulance 47. Two additional patients were located which also brought Prince Frederick Ambulance 49 and North Beach Ambulance 18 to the call. The crew from Squad 6, Squad 2, and Chief 5A (McAllister) worked on extricating both patients. Dunkirk Engine 51 responded from quarters and handled the Landing Zone. At 1530 hours, Chief 6 terminated the Command.

Many thanks to the dedicated Volunteers of Huntingtown VFD. On this Monday, a crew of 6 operated on the Eastern Shore, while crews back at home staffed Engine 62, Squad 6, Ambulance 69 (and all 4 Chiefs).
