Firefighters Attend Marley Run Block Party

By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
September 4, 2004

On Saturday September 4, 2004, Engine 61(Chief 6A, J. Riffe) and Squad 6 (Chief 6B, R. Hayes) attended the annual Marley Run Block party. There were approximately fifty members from the Marley Run subdivision with 30 children. The children got to climb in the apparatus, try out the equipment and put on our gear and SCBA to have a better understanding of what our job is about. After 90 minutes of public relations, Engine 61 and Squad 6 headed home.

30 minutes later good went to bad. Company 6 and Engine 151 (Navy Base) were alerted for a 13 year old in full arrest. Chief 6A (J. Riffe), Engine 151 (Capt. Farmer), Engine 62 (Chief 6B, R. Hayes), Ambulance 68 (EMT Z. Angelo) arrived to find a thirteen year old not breathing. When the child was 1 year old, he received a heart transplant and things had been okay until one month ago.

The child was worked by units for several minutes and was shocked a couple of times by the AED. A helicopter was requested so the child could be flown to Johns Hopkins but was later cancelled due to the length of time it would have taken for it to arrive. He was transported to Calvert Memorial where doctors worked him but unfortunately he was never revived. Many thanks goes out to the hard work given by Medic Inscoe, Medic Eskins and Medic Hassler. Also MSP handled traffic control and blocked all intersections while Ambulance 68 was in route to the hospital.
