4th of July House with Heavy Fire

By Chief Jonathan Riffe
July 4, 2008

This Independence Day, 2008, as storms were slamming the area, the Calvert County Volunteers were responding throughout the county. At 1854 hours, Chief 6B (Montgomery), Engine 62 (Hengstenberg), Squad 6 (Lt Thrasher) and Tanker 6 (Osbourn) were alerted to 6846 Hallowing Lane for the structural collapse. Shortly after clearing at 1911 hours, the same units above were dispatched to 1530 Dan Bowen Road for the house fire.

At units were clearing the above run, at 1926 hours the Box was struck at 2610 Parkers Creek Road for the house struck by lightning. Normally, the Huntingtown VFD is 3rd due to this location. However, Engine 62 responded 2nd due and Squad 6 responded as the 1st due Special Service. Engine 71 (St Leonard VFD) arrived on location with heavy smoke showing from the attic. Squad 6 arrived directly behind Engine 71. Chief 6B established command as the crew from Squad 6 quickly made their way to the 2nd floor. Heavy fire conditions were found in the attic and dropping down on the crew from Squad 6 as the ceiling was being pulled. Engine 62 arrived, advanced the 200' pre-connect to the 2nd floor and assisted Squad 6 and Engine 71 with extinguishing the fire. The Huntingtown Volunteers remained on the scene until 2055 hrs.

With this fire ongoing, crews back in Huntingtown were battling a 1st due House.
