Tornado, High Winds, and 85 mph Pounding Rains devastate Calvert County
By Chief Jonathan Riffe
June 4, 2008
Yesterday, June 4, the entire Metropolitan area was pounded with intense storms that ripped apart homes and businesses, knocking power to approximately 1,000,000 people, and leaving at least one person dead. Meteorologists are claiming that this group of 4 storms are the most powerful in this region that anybody can remember. At approximately 1445 hours, Calvert County was placed under a severe thunderstorm warning and tornado warning. Within seconds, the blue sky changed to an erie greenish purplish color with 85 mph gusting winds (confirmed by National Weather Service) and devastating rains that bent and broke trees, ripped off roofs, and blew out power to the entire area. The first emergency call in the county was for a head-on accident at Plum Point Road and Tobacco Road (626 Box). While Engine 12 (North Beach) was responding to assist, a tornado touched down directly in front of them ripping the 2nd floor off Traders Restauraunt along with the citizens that were inside. Hundreds of calls were dispatched throughout the county and didn't end until after midnight. Many thanks to the dedicated members that were able to staff every piece of apparatus at Huntingtown VFD.
