By Chief Jonathan Riffe
March 30, 2008

Saturday March 30, 2008 in the early afternoon, firefighters attending Chief Lasky's Conference at Huntingtown VFD had just sat down for lunch. Ambulance 69 was already out on the street on a medical. At 1220 hours, the Box Assignment was sounded on the east side of Huntingtown (217 Box) for the house fire bringing Chief 6 (Riffe), Engine 61 (Lt Kerns) and Squad 6 (S/O Bowen). While en route, Communications advised incoming units it would be the estate of Tom Clancy. Chief 6 & Captain 2 (both riding aboard Command 6) arrived at the 400 acre estate with nothing showing from the two-story "mega-mansion".

Upon entry, an occupant advised Chief 6 of a fire on the 2nd floor. Light smoke conditions were found on the 1st and 2nd floor. Mr. Clancy & his wife, both inside the house, were quickly evacuated. Fire was found on the 2nd floor deck with extension into the walls and void spaces of the 2nd floor. Burning embers dropped down to the 1st floor deck and also spread into the walls. Engine 21 and Squad 6 stretched a line to the 2nd floor while Engine 61 stretched a secondary line to the 1st floor. Due to quick work, firefighters from the Prince Frederick VFD and Huntingtown VFD were able to quickly bring the fire under control. A Working Fire Dispatch brought Chief 6B (Montgomery), Engine 62 (Cox, D), and Tanker 6 (Elliott) to the call. The Huntingtown Volunteers cleared the call at 1440 hours after an extensive overhaul.

Tom Clancy authored several novels including: The Hunt for Red October, Red Storm Rising, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger.
