By Chief Jonathan Riffe
January 22, 2008

32 minutes after midnight this morning, January 22, 2008, with temperatures in the "teens", Company 6 (Huntingtown), Company 5 (Dunkirk), Engine 12 (North Beach), and Company 2 (Prince Frederick) were dispatched to 151 Amber Way for the house fire. The Huntingtown Volunteers quickly responded with Chief 6 (Riffe), Chief 6A (Spriggs), Chief 6B (Montgomery), Engine 61 (Rountree), Engine 62 (Hengstenberg), Squad 6 (Robison), Tanker 6 (Lt Kerns), and Ambulance 69 (Inscoe, D). Upon arrival, heavy fire was showing from a one-story rambler (with basement). Chief 5B and Engine 61 advanced an attack line through the front door. Engine 52 began to advance an attack line through the basement entrance. Due to an unusual fire load and the prior headway, conditions quickly began to deteoriate causing an evacuation and a defensive attack. Just minutes after firefighters exited, the roof partially collapsed and a partial collapse on the 1st floor occured. A total of 5 handlines were pulled to eventually bring the fire under control. Unfortunately, the house was a total loss. Huntingtown units remained on the scene until 0527 hours. Two more times later that day, Engine 61, Squad 6, and Brush 6 were called back to the scene for small re-kindles. A total of 8.5 hours was spent on the scene by Company 6 units.
