One Trapped and Extricated in Huntingtown

By Chief Jonathan Riffe
August 12, 2007

With two Huntingtown crews (Engine 62 & Tanker 6) operating on a house fire at Route 4 and Chaney Road, several crews remained in quarters. At 1858 hours, the Huntingtown Volunteers and Medic Unit were alerted for the serious auto accident at Route 4 and Walnut Creek Road. Chief 6 (Riffe), Chief 6C (Hayes), Lieutenant 6 (Thrasher), Squad 6 (Cox, C), Engine 61 (Smith, S), Tanker 6 (clearing the house fire), Brush 6 (Sgt Kerns), Ambulance 68 (Capt Borden), and Ambulance 69 (Suchter) all responded less than a minute after dispatch. Units arrived to find a single-vehicle (pick-up) that had rolled a few times before coming to rest, trapping the driver. The Huntingtown Volunteers swiftly went into action splitting the 6-man Squad crew. The driver went to work stabilizing and securing the vehicle. Another team went to work on the driver's side utilizing the HURST Maverick tool and "O" cutters to remove the driver's side door and driver's "A" and "B" post. The 3rd crew went to work removing the windshield and used the 2nd set of "O" cutters to remove the passenger side "A" and "B" post. All this work was completed in less than 5 minutes. Upon extrication, he was passed to awaiting EMS crews. The patient was flown to PG Shock Trauma for further evaluation. Engine 61 and Tanker 6 handled the Landing Zone at Huntingtown High School. Chief 6 terminated command at 1953 hours.

Due to the impact with the culvert in the median strip, the front driver's side tire tore through the floor of the vehicle and frame rails, narrowly missing the driver's legs and feet which would have most likely been severed or amputated.

**A total of 29 Huntingtown Volunteers operated on the these two incidents (house fire and extrication) simultaneously staffing 2 Engines, Tanker, Squad, 2 Ambulances, Brush Truck, and 2 Chief Buggies. Even during that, another crew remained in quarters with the only piece left to ride being Jeep 6. Outstanding job!**
