Red Knights Support Huntingtown VFD Member with Scholarship

By Chief Jonathan Riffe
August 11, 2007

This past Thursday at the Huntingtown VFD monthly business meeting was truly a special night for two reasons. Member, Ty Lester, who joined a few years ago, is unfortunately moving to Idaho to pursue a college degree and his dream.

Since becoming a member, he's had a profound impact in Huntingtown VFD and everybody he has met. At such a young age, he was able to graduate from high school, complete the high school fire department cadet program, undertake a multitude of Fire, Rescue, EMS classes, work 3 jobs (one being www.cashthetrash.com....), complete an associates degree in fire science, sleep at the firehouse 95% of the time, have a social and family life, and also take 1st place in a state fire training competition, as well as place 5th place in National's. A true role model.

To follow his dream, his love of the wilderness and environment, and strange dream of fighting large brush/mountain fires, he moved to Idaho, this morning, Saturday August 11th along with his entire family.

At the business meeting, Thursday night, was also the local "Southern Maryland Red Knights MD4" (www.rkmcmd4.com). Because of Ty's accomplishments (particularly 5th place in National's), the Red Knights presented Ty with a $1000.00 scholarship check for him to use while in college in Idaho. Many thanks to the Red Knights, and our own member (and also Red Knights member), Treasurer Chris Gadway for making this possible.

After the meeting, the several dozen members of Huntingtown VFD met in the Banquet Hall for a final farewell with cake, ice cream, and refreshments courtesy of the Huntingtown VFD Ladies Auxiliary. Ty, we will miss you buddy. See you when you return!
