By Chief Jonathan Riffe
May 27, 2007

On Sunday May 27, 2007 at 1959 hours, the Huntingtown Volunteers and surrounding companies were alerted to 6260 Solomons Island Road (Box 613) for the commercial building struck by lightning possibly on fire. Huntingtown responded with 3 Chiefs (Spriggs, Montgomery, Hayes), Engine 61 (Lt Thrasher), Engine 62 (S/O Bowen), Squad 6 (Cox, C), Tanker 6 (Miller), and Ambulance 68 (EMS Capt Borden). Engine 61 arrived in the area, unable to locate anything. Communications advised Chief 6C (Hayes) that the 911 call originated from Lower Marlboro Road. With 6 Huntingtown pieces already operating, another crew in quarters responded with Ambulance 69 (Grierson, R) to a possible auto accident.

At the same time, Chief 5A advised he was investigating a large column of black smoke. He arrived at 6837 Old Solomons Island Road and found a fully-involved shed fire and brush (Anne Arundel 42-34 Box). Chief 6B (Montgomery), Engine 62 (S/O Bowen), and Squad 6 (Cox, C) quickly cleared the 613 Box. Engine 62 normally not even due to this area, arrived as the 2nd due engine and laid out 500' of 3" hose from the cul-de-sac to Engine 12.

With those units responding, Chief 6C found the source of the 1st call to be a tree on fire at 200 Lower Marlboro Road. Brush 6 (Davis) and Tanker 6 (Miller) responded and operated for over an hour extinguishing the fire.

At one point, 8 pieces of apparatus and 31 Huntingotwn Volunteers were on the street at one time (Engine 61, Engine 62, Squad 6, Tanker 6, Brush 6, Ambulance 68, Ambulance 69, Command 6). 8 more members remained in quarters with no apparatus to ride. Units returned to service at 2140 hours.
