On Tuesday January 16, 2007 at 1415 hours, Chief 6 (Riffe), Squad 6 (Cooper), and Ambulance 69 (Hayward) were alerted to Route 4 and Mount Harmony Rd along with Company 5 (Dunkirk) and the Medic Unit for the serious auto accident. Company 5 units arrived on location of a high-speed single vehicle accident (reports vehicle was traveling approximately 130 mph). The car ran off the road, striking and breaking a telephone pole (wires across both sides of Route 4) before coming to rest. The driver was trapped due to all of the impact striking the driver's side compartment. Company 6 units arrived on location and immediately went to work assisting Squad 5 with extricating the driver. All extrication tools were utilized off of Squad 6 and Squad 5 to conduct the extrication. The driver's side door and entire roof was removed. In addition, many cuts were made around the steering column, engine block, "A" post, and frame rail to extricate both severely entangled legs which suffered severe traumatic injuries. The patient was removed and flown to a nearby trauma center. The passenger of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was ground transported by Ambulance 69 to Calvert Memorial. Huntingtown units picked up within the hour. Excellent teamwork by Squad 5 and Squad 6.
