By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
August 23, 2006

On Wednesday August 23, 2006, at 1910 hours, while several members were working Bingo, Engine Co. 6 (Huntingtown) was alerted for the Investigation (local alarm) in the area of Hardesty's Liquor Store. Chief 6 (Osbourn), Chief 6A (Riffe), Chief 6C (Spriggs), Engine 61 (Dorsey), and Tanker 6 (Muholland) arrived on the scene 4 minutes later and found heavy smoke showing from all sides of a 1.5 story vacant commercial building with a vacant two-story house attached to the rear. The Box Alarm was immediately requested bringing additional mutual aid companies. Hearing this at the station, the full parade of Huntingtown units quickly departed including Engine 62 (Lt Montgomery), Squad 6 (Safety Officer Bowen), Brush 6 (Grierson, M), Jeep 6 (Cox, C), Utility 6 (Sgt Nasti), Ambulance 68 (Stewart), and Ambulance 69 (Lt Nutwell) with 39 Volunteers. Meanwhile, the crew from Engine 61 quickly advanced the line into the store and found a rear storage room off. A quick attack by Engine 61 extinguished all fire before the mutual aid companies arrived. The crew from Squad 6 split into two teams; one team opening up the roof and the 2nd team searching the building for possible squatters (negative). Tanker 6 was used to supply Engine 61. Other companies were utilized to assist in opening up and checking for extension. Thanks to all the mutual aid companies who assisted on this box. All Huntingtown units cleared at 2101 hours. Engine 82 (Benedict) and Truck 42 (Deale) handled the fill-ins at the quarters of Company 6.
