Four Boxes and One Fire within the Hour

By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
June 23, 2006

In the early morning hours of Friday June 23, 2006 at approximately 0200, just as a storm with severe winds and steady downpours was passing over the area, 911 calls began pouring into Communications. The first call alerted the Huntingtown Volunteers and mutual aid companies to a house struck by lightning on Hatfield Road on the west side of Huntingtown. Units were cancelled quickly due to the call being good intent.

Before backing into quarters, Engine 61 (Lt Thrasher) and Squad 6 (Lt Montgomery) were dispatched to Company 2's area for a house fire. Chief 2B (Howes) found a fully-involved barn fire. Engine 61 assisted units on the scene with extinguishing the fire but Squad 6 was re-routed to another first due box.

Chief 6 (Osbourn), Chief 6A (Riffe), Chief 6B (Hayes), Engine 62 (Sgt Nasti), Squad 6, Tanker 6 (Fitzgerald), and Ambulance 68 (Gadway) were alerted to Evans Crest for another reported house fire. Captain 6 (Mckenny) found a house struck by lightning with no fire hazards. Units were quickly placed in service from this call and then were re-routed to another reported house fire in Company 2's area which ended up being good intent also.

Just as units backed into quarters from the above three boxes, Tanker 6 (Kerns) was dispatched to Company 7's (St Leonard) first due for the reported house fire. Units arrived to find another good intent call due to a lightning strike.

With both Engines, the Squad, Tanker, and Ambulances committed on the above calls, Brush 6 also responded on two calls for trees blocking the roadway. The only remaining piece left in the building was Jeep 6. Thanks to the over 35 Volunteers who fully staffed every piece!

Units: 3 Chiefs, Engine 61, Engine 62, Squad 6, Tanker 6, Ambulance 68, Ambulance 69
