On Saturday June 10, 2006 while many of our members were working upstairs at the Monthly Texas Hold-em Tournament, Rescue Box 626 was sounded at 1915 hours for the boat in distress in the Chesapeake Bay 1/4 mile out from the end of Plum Point Road. This call alerted Company 6 (Huntingtown), Boat 4 (Prince Frederick RS), and Boat 70 (Eastern Shore, Talbot County). Chief 6 (Osbourn), Captain 6 (McKenny), Squad 6 (Lt Thrasher), and Ambulance 69 (Muholland) were first to arrive on the scene. Chief 6 established Command as units began to investigate what had actually occured. Fortunately, Chief 1B (Gibson) was also in the Bay and was able to arrive at the boat rather quickly to give additional information. Aboard the boat, the sole occupant was missing with reports the boat had been floating unattended for 45 mins-3 hours. Due to this information, DNR was also dispatched along with the Calvert County Dive Team and Trooper 7. Units searched the bay for several hours unable to locate the body. Later the next day, it was announced that the victim was a well-known publisher and former diplomat. As of June 12, the sailboater has still not been recovered.
