One Trapped/Extricated in Huntingtown

By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
May 30, 2006

On Monday May 29, 2006 at 0700 hours, the Huntingtown Volunteers and Ambulance 48 (Rescue Squad) were dispatched to Route 4 and Cox Road for the auto accident. Immediately following dispatch, Chief 6B (Hayes) arrived to find a single-vehicle into a light pole with the driver severely trapped with multi-traumatic injuries. Command was established by Chief 6B as units began to respond in. Due to the patient being trapped, Communications alerted Squad 2 (Prince Frederick) and the Medic to the call. Next arriving, Squad 6 (Lt Thrasher), Engine 62 (Safety Officer Bowen), Ambulance 69 (Sgt Nasti), Ambulance 68 (Wells, K) arrived on location. The EMS crews began to treat the trapped patient and the passenger, while the crews from Squad 6 and Engine 62 began to extricate the patient. All of the impact was in the drivers door and the car was still wrapped around the pole. Because of the pole making it inaccessible to reach the victim, the winch off of the Squad was used to pull the car away from the pole. Next, the two crews utilized the HURST Maverick Combo tool, the 32" Spreaders, and both "O" cutters to remove both driver's side doors, the entire driver's "B" post, and roof. Squad 2 arrived on location to assist in the operation. Due to heavy fog in the area, the patient was transported to PG Trauma by A-69 and the passenger was ground-transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital by A-68. Command was terminated one hour later.

A-48 handled the fill-in at Company 6 quarters.
