By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
May 1, 2006

In the past two days, the Huntingtown Volunteers have responded on 3 first-due residential house fires all finding small fires.

The first one was dispatched on Sunday April 31, 2006 at 0848 hours. Company 6 (Huntingtown), Engine 151 (Navy Base), Company 5 (Dunkirk), Engine 12 (North Beach), and Tower 2 (Prince Frederick) were alerted to 1213 Alta Drive for the furnace fire. Chief 6, Engine 151, Engine 61 (Rountree), Squad 6 (Cox, C), Tanker 6 (Wells), and Ambulance 69 (Inscoe, D) arrived on location with light smoke showing. A handline was advanced through the residence where a towel was found burning on the top of the furnace due to being placed too close to the stove pipe. The Squad crew ventilated the residence. The fire was quickly extinguished and the box was downgraded to Engine 151 and Company 6. Chief 6 terminated command at 0938 hours.

Less than 24 hours later on Monday May 1, 2006 at 0042 hours, Engine 151 (Navy Base), Company 6, Company 2, Engine 12, Tanker 5 (Dunkirk), and Tanker 7 (St Leonard) were alerted to 1453 Bidwell Lane for the house fire. Captain 6 (McKenny) was first arriving, reported smoke showing and established the Command. Chief 6 (Osbourn), Engine 61 (Sgt Nasti), Engine 62 (Safety Officer Bowen), Squad 6 (Robinson), Tanker 6 (Wells), and Ambulance 69 (Gadway, J), along with Engine 21 arrived next and found fire on the front porch of a residence that had spread into the siding of the house. Units quickly advanced an attack line and brought the fire under control and checked for extension. The box was quickly held to Company 6, Engine 21 and Engine 151. Command was terminated at 0123 hours.

Twelve hours later at 1348 hours, just as Ambulance 69 (Scoggins) was pulling out for a medical local, Company 6, Company 2, Company 5, and Tanker 7 were alerted to 1521 Primrose Lane for the stove fire. Chief 6A (Riffe), Chief 6C (Spriggs), Engine 61 (Sgt Nasti), Squad 6 (Lt Montgomery), and Ambulance 68 (Jones, S) arrived on location with light smoke showing from the front door. Chief 6A established command while an attack line was quickly advanced. Inside the kitchen, the stove top, microwave and cabinets were found to be on fire. The fire was quickly brought under control and the box was held to Company 6 and Engine 21. Command was terminated at 1429 hours.
