By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
February 7, 2006

On Monday February 6, 2006 at 0058 hrs, Company 6 and Ambulance 5 (Dunkirk) was alerted first-due to the Route 2/4 Split in Sunderland for the auto accident (not reported serious). Engine 62 (Sgt Nasti) as the Rescue-Pumper and Ambulance 69 (Muholland) arrived minutes later to find a serious high-speed head-on collision, one patient trapped and pulseless. Command was established (Sgt 6), and a Squad (Company 5) along with Huntingtown Medic 103 (Borden) was dispatched. Hearing this information, the 3rd crew at the station, quickly manned Engine 61 (Lt Montgomery) and responded to the call. E-62's crew quickly went to work splitting into three crews. The 1st crew utilized the 32" Jaws in removing the driver's side door to gain access to the patient. The 2nd crew utilized the "O" Cutters in removing the roof from the vehicle. The 3rd crew manned the charged hoseline to protect the rescue personnel. Within five minutes, the Extrication crew had the patient freed. Squad 5 arrived on location and utilized their HURST Rams to roll the dash to free the trapped patients legs. Command requested two helicopters (Trooper 7 and Trooper 2) for both patients. Engine 61 handled the Landing Zone. During the incident, one firefighter received minor injuries when Hydraulic Fluid splashed into his eye during extrication operations. He was released from Calvert Memorial shortly after.
