Sad weekend for the fire service

By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
October 9, 2004

This past weekend has been an upsetting weekend for the fire service.

During the early morning hours of Saturday October 9, 2004, a DC Firefighter Recruit was seriously injured in motor vehicle collision in Fairfax County while on his way home. Three people did not survive the accident and the DC Recruit is still hospitalized in critical condition.

Also that day at 1604 hours, Company 6 (Huntingtown) was alerted to respond to 3411 Black Oak Court for the subject that had fallen off of a ladder. Chief 6B (R. Hayes), Chief 6C (C. Spriggs), Ambulance 68 (EMT D. Bowman) and Engine 62 (F/F M. Nasti) arrived to find a male patient that had fallen 20 feet off of a ladder. The patient was unconcious with severe head trauma. The crews quickly began medical treatment while the Medic Unit began ALS care. Engine 62 set up the Landing Zone and the patient was transported to PG Shock Trauma. The patient later that night passed away due to his injuries. It is regret to announce that the patient was a one-time member of the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the PG Glen Dale Volunteer Fire Department (18).

Also, later that night, Past Chief Tommy Manifold passed away at his residence in Deale. Details can be provided through Company 42 (Deale).

Our hearts and prayers from the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department go out to the family and friends of all these families.
