Serious Huntingtown Auto Accident

By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
December 9, 2005

On Friday December 9, 2005 at 2047 hours, shortly after returning from the Santa Claus run, Ambulance 68 (Foresta) was returning back to quarters from the hospital with the Medic Unit. Communications advised Ambulance 68 to start towards Plum Point Road with the Medic. At the same time, Ambulance 68 reported they were on the scene of a serious auto accident at the same location. Company 6, Squad 2 (Prince Frederick), and Medic 104 (with 2 of our own Volunteers) were dispatched to the call. Minutes later, Chief 6A (Riffe), Chief 6B (Hayes), Chief 6C (Spriggs), Squad 6 (Lt Cox), Engine 62 (Thrasher) and Ambulance 69 arrived on location. Chief 6A established the Plum Point Command while units began to assist Ambulance 68 already at work. Witnesses stated that the vehicle left the roadway, and flipped "end over end" at least 4 times. One patient was still inside and reportedly unconscious with severe head trauma. The crews from Squad 6 and Squad 2 quickly removed the patient from the vehicle and assisted the EMS crews. The patient was air-lifted to Baltimore Shock Trauma priority 1. Engine 62 handled the Landing Zone and Engine 151 (Navy Base) filled our station. Calvert County Sheriff's Department Accident Reconstruction team investigated the incident.

**Side Note: The patient was the daughter of one our own members. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
