By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
October 19, 2005

On Wednesday October 19, 2005 at 1414 hours, while Ambulance 68 was on a medical in the first due, Company 6 (Huntingtown), Engine 151 (Navy Base), and Ambulance 58 (Dunkirk) were alerted to Route 4 and Ponds Wood Road for the auto accident. Chief 6A (Riffe), Chief 6B (Hayes), Chief 6C (Spriggs), Squad 6 (Lt Montgomery), Engine 62 (Kerns), and Ambulance 69 arrived to find two-vehicles involved with one patient trapped in the driver's compartment. Chief 6A established the command while the crew from Squad 6 began to extricate the driver. The HURST Maverick, 32" Spreaders, and "O" cutters were utilized to remove both driver's side doors and the "B" post. Engine 62 advanced the front attack line for protection during the extrication while the Ambulance crew evaluated the patient. Due to mechanism and possible internal injuries, the decision was made to fly the patient to a trauma center. The Landing Zone was handled by Engine 151. The Squad crew secured and stabilized the vehicle along with extricating the patient in less than 10 minutes. The trapped patient was flown to PG Shock Trauma and the driver of the 2nd vehicle was transported to CMH by A-58.

While units were picking up to go back into service, another accident occured at the same location. It was found to be property damage and all units were back in service at 1500 hours. Upon backing into quarters, Squad 6, Ambulance 68, and Ambulance 69 were directed by Communications to start south due to another accident at Route 4 and Dares Beach Road. All Huntingtown units were back in service a short time later.
