By Fire Captain & Public Information Officer (PIO) Jonathan Riffe
November 18, 2014

Monday November 18 at 2101 hours, the Huntingtown Volunteers were alerted for the Auto Accident in the 3100 block of North Solomons Island Road in the area or Route 4 & Bowie Shop Road. The Huntingtown VFD Fire Chief (Spriggs), Assistant Chief (Morris), Rescue Squad (Gaylor), Rescue Engine 62 (Morgal, J) & Ambulance 68 (Rogers) responded on the incident. Supplemental information from 911 callers advised that a telephone pole had been struck and the vehicle had crashed into a building.

The Huntingtown Volunteers arrived in the area and found a pole had been struck and sheared off with high-tension power lines down completely shutting down both north-bound & south-bound sides of Route 4. After shearing off the telephone pole, the vehicle crashed into Express Liquors, which sustained only minor structural damage. Assessing the scene and patient, the Rescue Squad crew found the driver pinned in the driver's seat. After just a few minutes, the driver's side door was forced open to gain access for the EMS crews, who found the patient experiencing an altered mental status and loss of consciousness. With this information, a Medic Unit was requested, but Medic Utility 6 (Threlfall, G) responded from quarters with ALS gear, thus cancelling the Medic Unit. Engine 62 established a Landing Zone on the scene and the patient was flown to a local trauma center. Units from the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department cleared by 2200 hours.

Units: Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, Rescue Squad, Rescue Engine, Medic Utility 6 & Ambulance 68
