Fire Showing From Sandy Point Road House

By Fire Captain & Public Information Officer (PIO) Jonathan Riffe
November 12, 2014

Wednesday November 12, 2014 at 1116 hours, Prince Frederick VFD Engine 21 & Tower 2, Benedict VFD (Charles County) Engine 832, Tanker 83 & Ambulance 838, Hughesville VFD (Charles County) Engine 811 & Squad 81, Huntingtown VFD Engine 62 & Tanker 6 and Prince Frederick VRS Ambulance 48 were alerted for the House Fire at 6156 Sandy Point Road. This location is just a couple of miles from the Patuxent River, dividing Calvert County & Charles County. Huntingtown VFD Engine 62 (Lanier, M) & Tanker 6 (Thrasher) responded with 7 firefighters. First due units from the Prince Frederick VFD arrived on location of a one-story wood-frame rancher and reported heavy fire showing from the rear and through the roof.

Engine 62 (4th due Engine), was the 2nd arriving Engine Company and assumed such responsibilities. The crew stretched a back-up line on the fire while the Wagon Driver laid a line to Engine 21, supplying the fireground. Due to the short length of the driveway and an initial supply line not being laid, the Wagon Driver made a proactive decision and hand-jacked 600' of supply line, moving Water Supply operations away from the fireground. Meanwhile, the crew from Engine 62 assisted with knocking down the fire located in the Bravo & Charlie quadrants and attic. Crews quickly realized that reaching the fire in the cockloft would be a lengthy & tedious process due to the ceilings being constructed of plywood. Once crews were able to cut into the ceiling with chainsaws and remove it with hooks, the fire was quickly knocked down. Units from the Huntingtown VFD operated just under 3 hours, clearing at 1402 hours.

An additional Engine & Ambulance crew staffed the station during the fire.
