By Fire Captain & Public Information Officer (PIO) Jonathan Riffe
October 29, 2014

At the height of the morning rush hour traffic, at 0612 hours on Wednesday October 29, 2014, The Huntingtown VFD and Dunkirk VFD Squad 5 & Ambulance 58, were alerted for the Serious Auto Accident at Route 4 & Ponds Wood Road. In addition, St. Leonard VFD Ambulance 78 (ALS equipped) responded to the scene from Calvert Memorial Hospital with a Medic on-board. The Huntingtown VFD Fire Chief (Spriggs), Assistant Chief (Morris), Deputy Fire Chief (Clark), Rescue Squad (Sgt. Miller) & Ambulance 68 (Fitzgerald) responded on the call.

The Huntingtown Volunteers arrived on location and found a serious single-vehicle accident with a passenger still trapped in the pick-up truck. The driver of the vehicle & a two-year old toddler were already out of the vehicle. The crew from Rescue Squad 6 stabilized & secured the vehicle and deployed the HURST Maverick Combi-Tool, forcing & removing the passenger side door, prior to rapidly extricating the female patient. The crew from Ambulance 68 immediately began CPR on the unresponsive and pulseless patient. The crew from Ambulance 58 & Ambulance 78 provided patient care to the driver & two-year old toddler. Both driver & toddler were flown by Trooper 7 to a local trauma center. After performing CPR for several minutes on the female passenger, the on-scene Medic pronounced the patient. Dunkirk VFD Engine 51 handled the Landing Zone for Trooper 7. The Huntingtown Volunteers operated on the scene until 0724 hours.
