By Fire Captain & Public Information Officer (PIO) Jonathan Riffe
August 17, 2014

Sunday August 17, 2014 at 0922 hours, the Huntingtown VFD Fire Chief (Spriggs), Assistant Chief (Morris), Deputy Fire Chief (Clark) & Rescue Squad (Sgt Gaylor) were alerted to Route 231 & Mason Drive for the vehicle into the house with entrapment (2-10 Box). First arriving units from the Prince Frederick VFD found a single vehicle completely into the Side “A” & “D” corner of a house with severe structural damage and the driver trapped. Command immediately requested a 3rd Rescue Squad to the scene bringing St Leonard VFD Squad 7.

Units went to work stabilizing the house, utilizing every single piece of cribbing and every air shore off of Rescue Squad 6. Once the interior & exterior of the house was shored up, it was decided to remove the vehicle from the house to begin the extrication due to the instability and possible collapse of the building. The winch was connected to the car, slowly removing it from the house with the driver still inside. Crews removed both doors, all of the posts & windshield to gain access to the patient. Once this was accomplished, the dash was rolled to free the patient’s legs. To complete these tasks, every piece of HURST hydraulic equipment was utilized off of Squad 6 including the RAMS, both “O” Cutters, the Maverick Combi-tool & 32” Jaws Spreaders. After approximately one hour, the semi-conscious driver was extricated from the vehicle and loaded into the EMS unit for transport to the Landing Zone. The patient was flown to a nearby trauma center. Units from the Huntingtown VFD operated on the scene until 1024 hours.
