By Fire Captain & Public Information Officer (PIO) Jonathan Riffe
August 12, 2014

Tuesday August 12, 2014 at 2048 hours, Box Alarm 5-09 was transmitted for the "Smoke in the House" at 11800 Cedarwood Drive in Dunkirk, MD. Huntingtown VFD Fire Chief (Spriggs), Engine 62 (Sgt Gaylor) & Tanker 6 (Spriggs, T) responded on the alarm. First arriving units reported smoke showing from a 2-story single-family residence. The Working Fire Dispatch was sounded bringing a 3rd crew from quarters, Rescue Squad 6 (Wallace). Crews encountered heavy smoke conditions inside of the house and found a basement furnace on fire. Quick work was made of that fire and as units began to investigate the floors above, found that the fire had spread up the pipe chase and extended into the attic.

North Beach VFD Tower 1 opened up the roof, with fire showing as crews began to aggressively extinguish all remaining fire in the attic. Engine 62, dispatched 3rd due, arrived as the 2nd Engine Company and assumed such responsibilities; supplying Engine 51 and backing their crew up with an additional attack line. The crew from Rescue Squad 6 arrived on location, completed the primary & secondary searches, opened up for the Engine Companies and checked for any further extension with the use of the TIC. Tanker 6 supplied the fireground. The Fire Chief & 3 crews operated on the scene until 2207 hours.
