By Fire Captain & Public Information Officer (PIO) Jonathan Riffe
July 31, 2014

Thursday July 31, 2014 at 1014 hours, units from the Huntingtown VFD, Dunkirk VFD, North Beach VFD & Prince Frederick VFD were alerted for the House Fire at 5751 Stephen Reid Road. The Box Assignment brought the Huntingtown VFD Assistant Chief, 6A (Morris), Captain (Riffe), Engine 61 (Thrasher), Rescue Squad (Sgt Miller), Tanker (Sewell), Brush Truck (Sgt Gaylor) & Ambulance 69 (Luna). With units enroute, Communications advised that the homeowner had broken out a basement window and attempted to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher but was unsuccessful. Minutes later, units were advised the homeowner had called back and advised his entire basement was on fire, resulting in the Working Fire Dispatch being sounded.

Engine 61 arrived on location of a single-story wood-frame house with heavy smoke showing. The crew deployed the 200' crosslay to the rear basement entrance and found fire showing from every single basement window. The crew began making an aggressive interior attack on the fully-involved basement, backed up by Dunkirk Engine 51. As units were making significant progress in the basement, crews on Division 1 found the kitchen, bathroom, two bedrooms, hallway and entire attic on fire. Every unit on the fireground went to work and after approximately 15 minutes, brought the fire under control. Units from the Huntingtown VFD operated on the scene for 3 hours before returning to service.
