By Fire Captain & Public Information Officer (PIO) Jonathan Riffe
July 26, 2014

Saturday July 26, 2014 at 1554 hours, The Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad was alerted for the Overturned Vehicle with Entrapment at Huntingtown Road & Stephen Reid Drive. The assignment brought the Deputy Chief (Miller), Safety 6 (McKenny), Captain 6 (Riffe), Rescue Squad (Sgt Gaylor), Rescue Engine (Cox, C) & Ambulance 69 (Rogers). With units enroute, Communications relayed supplemental information that the Maryland State Police were on scene and had 2-3 people trapped.

The Huntingtown Volunteers arrived at the corrected location in front of 6255 Huntingtown Road and found a single-vehicle overturned with the driver trapped (lone occupant). The 6-man crew aboard Squad 6 stabilized the vehicle prior to removing the drivers side front door with the 32" HURST Jaws. Once access was gained to the patient, it was quickly determined that his legs were severely trapped by the dash board, fire wall & engine compartment. Crews utilized the Jaws and Maverick combi-tool to meticulously cut away the jagged metal quickly freeing his legs. The total extrication took approximately 8 minutes. Once complete, the patient was loaded into Ambulance 69 where BLS & ALS (Calvert Medic 101) treatment began. Engine 62 protected the Extrication Group & patient with the charged bumper line. Bystanders advised prior to fire department arrival, the engine compartment was on fire but had been extinguished with a fire extinguisher. The patient who was suffering from severe head trauma was flown to a local trauma center. Dunkirk VFD Engine 52 handled the Landing Zone. Prince Frederick VFD Squad 2 was dispatched to the accident but was cancelled prior to arriving. Units from the Huntingtown VFD returned to service at 1647 hours.

Deputy Chief 6 had the "Huntingtown Road" Command.
