NEW UPDATE: Huntingtown assists Hurricane Katrina victims

By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
September 5, 2005

New Update: In addition to Deputy Chief Spriggs leaving Sunday (yesterday), this morning three additional Huntingtown members departed for Mississippi. Engineer Dorsey, F/F EMT R. Rountree, and F/F EMT R. Muholland departed and will return in seven days. Please keep all of our volunteers in your thoughts while they are assisting the Hurricane victims.

Due to the mass devastation in the southern United States from Hurricane Katrina, FEMA has requested any assistance from volunteers from across the country in the cleanup/recovery efforts. Millions of people are homeless and thousands are unaccounted for. Deputy Chief Spriggs received a phone call Saturday morning from FEMA in regards to him leaving to assist the victims. Spriggs will be leaving Sunday (9/4/05) with another firefighter and will return in 30 days. Please keep Spriggs in your thoughts and prayers.

Additionally, the next Huntingtown VFD poker tournament will be held Saturday September 24th. The department agreed Thursday at the business meeting that ALL proceeds will go to the New Orleans Fire and Police Departments. This is just one other way that we are always looking to help our fellow brothers out. In 2001, shortly after September 11th, the Huntingtown VFD donated $25,000 to the FDNY after they lost 343 of their own.

Anybody interested in volunteering in the the hurricane-hit-areas can visit: www.fema.gov/ for further information.
