By Public Information Officer (PIO) Jonathan Riffe
June 29, 2014

Route 4 in the area of Owings, MD turned into a dangerous stretch of highway during the early morning hours of Sunday June 29, 2014. At 0344 hours, the Deputy Fire Chief (Clark), Rescue Squad (Rountree) & Ambulance 68 (Carson) were alerted for the overturned vehicle into a tree in front of Kelly Generator, Solomons Island Road & Dale Lane (501 Box). First arriving units from the Dunkirk VFD arrived on location and found the same, with all occupants self-extricated. The units from the Huntingtown VFD operated on the scene for 15 minutes before returning to service.

30 minutes after returning to service, at 0451 hours, a serious accident occurred just 1 mile from the previous incident in the vicinity of Route 4 & Skinners Turn Road. Initial reports indicated a single-vehicle overturned, off the roadway with the driver trapped. The Deputy Fire Chief, 6B (Clark), Rescue Lieutenant (Ward), Rescue Squad (Cox) & Ambulance 68 (Carson) responded on the call. Units arrived on location and found the single-vehicle on its side, several hundred feet off the roadway into a field with the driver trapped. Dunkirk VFD Engine 52 stabilized the vehicle and deployed a charged handline while Rescue Squad 6 began operations. The crew removed both front & rear windshields and utilized the HURST "O" Cutters to cut through the 3 passenger side posts before flapping the roof to remove the trapped driver. The patient was flown to a local trauma center. Chief 6B handled Operations during the incident.
