By Public Information Officer (PIO) Jonathan Riffe
May 30, 2014

In the early evening hours of Friday May 30, 2014, Huntingtown VFD Engine 62 was standing by at Sunderland Elementary School for a public relations event. At 1805 hours, Area Box 5-01 was transmitted for "smoke in the house" at 2012 Timberneck Drive in Owings, MD. The Huntingtown VFD Deputy Fire Chief, 6B (Clark), Deputy Rescue Chief, 6C (Miller), Engine 62 (Miller, J) as the 2nd due Engine Company & Tanker 6 (Robinson, G) responded on the call. Engine 62's 6 man crew was the first arriving unit on the scene, passing command, laying out 600' of supply line and stretching the 200' crosslay with smoke showing from a one-story wood-frame house. With their transmission, the Working Fire Dispatch was sounded, bringing an additional 2 crews from quarters, Rescue Squad 6 (Sgt Smith) & Ambulance 69 (Jordan).

The crew from Engine 62 found a fully-involved kitchen with extension into the cockloft. As they began extinguishing the fire, Command advised that fire was now showing through the roof. With the assistance of incoming units, the cathedral ceilings were opened up, knocking down all remaining fire. The crew from Rescue Squad 6 opened up the roof above the fire. Tanker 6 supplied the fireground & Ambulance 69 set up rehab for firefighters on the scene. The 18 Huntingtown Volunteers operated on the scene for 2 hours.
