| Friday May 23, 2014 at 1528 hours, the Huntingtown Volunteers were alerted to 2372 Smoky Road for a man trapped underneath of a tree. The Fire Chief (Montgomery), Deputy Fire Chief (Clark), Rescue Squad (Lt Ward), Engine 62 (Bevard) & Ambulance 69 (Osbourn, A) responded on the call. Minutes later, units arrived on location and found a 40' tall, 2.5' wide tree on top of an elderly man pinning both of his legs. In addition, his tractor was found on top of the tree.
After a thorough evaluation, the Rescue Squad members began to stabilize the tree by setting up box cribs utilizing various pieces of cribbing. While this was underway, a come-along was set up to carefully remove the tractor off of the tree. Once removed, members cut two large sections of the tree with one of the chainsaws. With the tree now stabilized and cut into thirds, airbags were set up to slowly and methodically lift the tree off of the patient. The elderly male, suffered bi-lateral femur fractures as a result. With the assistance of the Medic Unit, he was packaged and loaded into Ambulance 69 and transported by air to a local trauma center. Units returned to service from the scene 56 minutes after time of dispatch. Excellent work to all involved!
