April 12, 2014

On March 7, 2014, 16 year old member Tyler Latvala miraculously saved the life of a young man in cardiac arrest that was found face down in the snow while Tyler was on his way to school. Since that time, Tyler has been honored several times for his actions performed on that day.

Board of Education Award: On March 20, 2014 the Board of Education and Interim Superintendent Nancy Highsmith took time to recognize the heroic action and swift thinking on the part of four Huntingtown High School students and their substitute bus driver. The students and driver received official Proclamations and the thanks of the Board of Education members.

Board of Calvert County Commissioners Award: During their Tuesday, March 25 meeting, the Calvert County Commissioners presented a proclamation to Tyler Latvala. The large audience in the commissioners’ hearing room gave Tyler a standing ovation in acknowledgement of his heroics. “I don’t know how many ways we can say thank you,” said Commissioners’ President Pat Nutter. Wes Lapre, who is the commander of Calvert Civil Air Patrol (CAP), praised the actions of the students and bus driver, calling them “everyday heroes” that live in and serve the community.
