By Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Riffe
November 4, 2013

Monday November 4, 2013 at 1230 hours, Communications alerted units from the Huntingtown VFD for a vehicle accident at Plum Point Rd & Bayside Road. Immediately after dispatching the run, the call was upgraded to a vehicle on fire with a person trapped inside. This supplemental information added North Beach VFD Rescue 1 to the assignment. The Huntingtown Volunteers responded with: Safety Officer 6 (McKenny), the Rescue Squad (Lt Ward), Rescue Engine 62 (Capt Clark), Utility 6 (Sergeant Colliflower) & Ambulance 69 (Morgal, H). While units were enroute, Communications advised that police were on the scene confirming a vehicle on fire with the driver trapped inside. The Huntingtown Volunteers arrived on location and found a vehicle into a tree, the engine compartment on fire & driver trapped. Fortunately, the police knocked down the bulk of the fire with an extinguisher before it extended into the passenger compartment. Engine 62 quickly deployed the front bumper line, knocking down all remaining fire. Crews had to utilize a chain saw to cut down one tree to gain access to the driver's side door. While this was underway, crews placed two struts under the vehicle to stabilize it before the extrication began. Once all was accomplished, the driver's side door was forced and removed with the HURST Jaws & "O" Cutters. The patient was turned over to Ambulance 69 & Medic Unit and flown to a local trauma center. Engine 62 handled the Landing Zone. Units from the Huntingtown VFD returned to service at 1319 hours.
