By Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Riffe
July 3, 2013

Wednesday July 3, 2013 at 1014 hours, 911 calls began pouring in reporting several loud explosions with smoke and fire showing from "beside 1730 Plum Point Road." Two minutes later, the assignment was dispatched for the "Working Garage Fire Attached To A House." The assignment brought Huntingtown VFD Deputy Fire Chief 6B (Riffe), Captain 6 (Clark), Engine 61 (Lt Montgomery), Engine 62 (Montgomery, M), Squad 6 (Hildwine), Tanker 6 (Lt Ward), Brush 6 (Rector) & Ambulance 68 (Lt Fitzgerald) on the run.

Chief 6B & Engine 61 arrived at the corrected address, 1710 Plum Point Road, of a 2-story split foyer residence with fire showing from the 2nd floor, both gable ends of the attic, rear of the residence and the attached garage (as well as 2 cars, a boat, tractor and green house). Chief 6B established Command while Engine 61's crew deployed two lines; one to the 2nd floor (with hooks) to knock down both rooms and attic while the 2nd line was used to blitz attack the garage that was fully-involved. Squad 6 arrived with Engine 21 (advanced their own 400' line) and both crews worked to get the 1st & 2nd floors opened up, assisting Engine 61's crew. Within minutes the bulk of the fire was knocked down. Remaining units on the fireground assisted with overhaul and hitting hot spots. Both residents were not home at the time of the fire & one cat was rescued by Engine 61's crew. Units from the Huntingtown VFD operated on the scene until 1230 hours.
