By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
August 5, 2005

On Friday August 5, 2005 in the late evening hours, a powerful storm struck the northern end of Calvert County bringing torrential downpours, an unusual amount of thunder and lightning and several boxes along with a fire. Just after Engine 62 was clearing a medical local at 2045 hours, Company 6 (Huntingtown) was alerted to Company 5's (Dunkirk) first due at 6865 Timberneck Nursery for the Fire Alarm. As units were picking up, Communications dispatched a reported shed fire just down the street at 7121 Persimmon Lane. Chief 5 (Wells), Chief 6 (Osbourn), Engine 62 (Lt Cox, D), and Squad 5 arrived to find a 10' X 10' well-involved with fire. Engine 62, as the first arriving engine, dropped their supply line and advanced the 400' attack line to make quick work of the fire.

While Chief 6, Engine 62, and Tanker 6 were still on the scene of the shed fire, a first due box was dispatched at 2061 Lowery Oak Lane for the possible house fire. Engine 61 (Thrasher), Squad 6 (Robinson), Tanker 6, Ambulance 69 responded from the station along with Chief 6 and Chief 6C (Spriggs). Engine 61 arrived minutes later and found smoke from a possible lightning strike.

As every single piece of apparatus from Huntingtown was committed on the above two calls, another first due box was alerted at 855 Monarch Lane for the lightning strike. Captain 6 (McKenny) arrived to find a tree struck directly beside the house and returned all units. Four more calls were dispatched for Huntingtown shortly after and the final units returned home just before 2300 hours.

Many thanks to all of the members that came out to staff every single piece of apparatus!!
