By Chief Jonathan Riffe
December 10, 2012

Monday December 10, 2012 at 1229 hours a priority 3, "unknown medical with traumatic injuries" was dispatched for 7155 Dorothy Drive. Due to Ambulance 69 being committed on a separate medical & Ambulance 68 out of service for mechanical issues, Dunkirk Ambulance 59 was alerted to the call. The Fire Chief (Riffe), Assistant Chief (Montgomery) & Engine 61 (Sgt Montgomery) also responded upon dispatch from Huntingtown VFD.

While responding, Chief 6 received supplemental information from Communications advising that a patient was burned due to a possible vehicle explosion. Seconds later, Dunkirk Chief 5A contacted Chief 6 and advised a homeowner on Trouble Lane (neighboring street to Dorothy Drive) contacted their station and advised a large explosion just shook their house and now a column of smoke could be seen in the sky. With this information, Dunkirk Engine 51 was additionally requested to the scene as well as Tanker 6 (Cox, C).

Units arrived on location and found one vehicle completely blown apart and fully-involved in fire with a neighboring trailer and truck severely damaged. The single patient was found suffering from flash burns, a broken femur, broken arm and other traumatic internal injuries. Engine 62 split the crew with one team extinguishing the fire while the second team assisted Ambulance 59 & Engine 51 with treating and packaging the patient. A helicopter was requested and arrived on scene but due to inclement weather was unable to transport. The patient was ground transported to PG Shock Trauma. Remaining units returned to service at 1353 hours.
