By Assistant Chief Jonathan Riffe
July 11, 2005

On Monday July 11, 2005 at 0811 hours, Company 6 (Huntingtown), Squad 5 and Ambulance 59 (Dunkirk), and the Medic Unit were alerted to Route 2 and Wayside Drive (616 Box) for the auto accident with fire. Chief 6 (Osbourn), Chief 6A (Riffe), Chief 6B (Hayes), Chief 6C (Spriggs), EMS Captain 6 (McKenny), Squad 6 (F/F Dorsey), Utility 6 (F/F Foresta), and Ambulance 69 (EMS Lt Nutwell, J) arrived to find an overturned dump-truck fully-involved with fire versus an SUV. Due to the amount of fire and the saddle-tank ruptured causing the fire to rapidly spread away from the dump-truck, Engine 151 (Navy Base) and Tanker 5 were added to the call. Three handlines utilizing foam were advanced by the crews from Squad 5, Squad 6, and Engine 151 to bring the fire under control. The remainder of the crew from Squad 6 assisted Ambulance 69 with the patient from the SUV. She was transported by Trooper 7 to PG Shock Trauma and the Landing Zone was also handled by Squad 6. The driver of the dump-truck was suprisingly enough, uninjured and refused medical treatment. Emergency Management responded to the scene to handle the diesel fuel and State Highway Administration also was alerted due to the amount of sand in the roadway that the dumptruck was hauling. Company 6 units remained on the scene until 1030 hours assisting the Sheriff's Department.
