On August 29, 2020, we lost our beloved brother, Lieutenant Dylan Smith after a four-year long battle with brain cancer. Our efforts immediately concentrated on caring for Dylan’s family. His parents, Shari and Carroll, his sister, Hope, and the love of his life, Brittney, showed amazing strength during this difficult time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who helped us through the loss of Lieutenant Dylan Smith. Dylan was a young man who meant a great deal to us and anyone who knew him. He had so many dreams and aspirations, and his wit and sense of humor was second to none.

As news of Dylan’s passing spread across our county, they united in strength and there was an immediate outpouring of support from fire departments across the region. We thank you for your quick, compassionate, and caring response.

I especially would like to thank all the fill-in crews for covering our town while we paid our respects to Dylan. To the fire departments from all over the state who travelled to attend Dylan’s funeral, it was an absolute honor having you be a part of the services. To the Calvert County Control Center, who signaled the last call for Dylan that made an emotional impact on all of us, thank you. I would also like to acknowledge all those who helped with the reception at our firehouse. Your hard work did not go unnoticed and it was greatly appreciated. Thank you for all those involved with organizing and attending a fitting tribute to Lieutenant Smith.

As the procession made its way down Route 4 to Dylan’s final resting place at Chesapeake Highlands Memorial Gardens in Port Republic, we were awestruck by the presence of so many waiting to pay their respects. The feeling of love and support gave us strength. A steady stream of residents lined the entire procession route. Residents saluted. Friends held their hands over their hearts. Children waved. All were emotional scenes and all in loving memory of Lieutenant Dylan Smith.

Shari, Carroll, Hope, Brittney, and Dylan’s entire family, we love you and we will always be present to support you.

Finally, to the men, women of the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department…this has been a grueling time for all of us. Your compassion and support of each other during this solemn event was second to none. You truly are amazing and make me so proud. Thank you.

Dylan, thank you for your service. We will never forget.
